Book fairs and new machines

After a fun trip over to the West Hollywood Book Fair on Sunday (mainly to watch morbidloren and the Morbid Curiosity Cures the Blues panel/signing), I was off to Fry's to buy a new computer.

This, of course, is always great fun. Yes, I'm being sarcastic. Really, really sarcastic.

First comes the basic setup of the machine. Next are the pathetic attempts to save whatever can be salvaged off the old, dead machine (in this case I got everything except my "Trash" and "Sent" folders from e-mail). Finally, of course, are the weeks of reinstalling software and configuring it again and trying to figure out why the new keyboard is set up differently from the old one and holding my breath as MS Word tries to decide whether an old story file is corrupt or not. Meanwhile, of course, I can't find half the discs for the software I need to reinstall. The fun never stops.

I'd like to write again. I'd like to get caught up on some work for HWA. I'd desperately like to work on the reads I owe a number of people. Instead I just gave away the last four days to a new computer.

And I'm convinced that Microsoft hires Satan to install games on these things.
