1 Degree of Separation

Perpetually being the last kid on the block to discover groovy new stuff, I'm just now making my way through Battlestar Galactica (and yes, it really is good). I'm midway through Season Two now, and who's my favorite character? Starbuck? An Adama? The Doctor? Nope - it's Racetrack, a supporting character who's a smartass Raptor pilot.

See, here's the thing: Leah Cairns, the actress who plays Racetrack, previously starred in a movie called Blood Angels - yep, the one I wrote (or at least that I wrote some version of). She played my favorite character, Leslie, the sympathetic vampire babe who is fiercely protective of her kid sis. Now most of the time as a screenwriter, you look at the casting and you think, Hmmm, not quite what I pictured but it's okay. But when I walked onto the Vancouver set of Blood Angels, I spotted Leah across the stage and practically passed out - she was exactly the way I saw that character when I was writing the script. It was startling. During the two days I was on that set we never actually met (and if you think it's weird that no one bothers to introduce the writer to the lead actor - dream on), and I'm sure she wondered who that geeky chick was who hung out in corners and stared at her in disbelief.

Fortunately, she was also very, very good in the film, and her performance (along with that of Siri Baruc as the sister) has spared me from being completely embarrassed by the film, so I am eternally grateful to her. And I'm very glad to see that she's getting work in an infinitely superior show.

Of course I do wonder why Adama doesn't just turn his vampire babe loose on those Cylons...
