Happy Horror Day!

Happy Friday the 13th and International Horror Day!

Let's celebrate with the work of possibly the world's greatest unknown director, the brilliant Canadian Guy Maddin. Maddin is prolific and has a unifying vision, but remains far less known than the other modern avant garde master, David Lynch. Maddin is perhaps more deliberately humorous than Lynch, although his short film "The Dead Father" remains possibly the most disturbing short film I've ever seen.

Maddin is obsessed with silent film technique, and is best known in the U.S. for The Saddest Music in the World (with Isabella Rosselini), and the midnight favorite Tales of the Gimli Hospital. Bravo is currently hosting four of Maddin's short films online, and for today's celebration I'm linkin' y'all up to "Sombra Dolorosa". faustfatale in particular should enjoy this delightfully colorful and lunatic foray into the world of horror, lucha libre and silent film:

I also highly recommend "Sissy Boy Slap Party" at Bravo. I haven't laughed that hard since W. C. Fields dealt with Baby LeRoy in It's a Gift. Enjoy!
