Novel #2

I have now completed the first draft of my second novel, The Castle of Los Angeles. Of course I've got a few weeks of polishing and clean-up still ahead of me, but the second hardest part is done (because, of course, the hardest part is actually selling the damn thing).

In just under a year I've gone from thinking, I'm not sure I can write an entire novel, to not one but two completed novels (a third one, written in collaboration with Del Howison, will probably be completed by the end of the year). I'm also pleased with knowing that Netherworld and Castle are very different books - one is a sprawling episodic historical dark fantasy, and the other is a compact little marriage of traditional Gothic thriller and contemporary urban horror. Both, however, employ one of my driving principles, which is to write horror centering on strong female leads that doesn't resort to "and she swooned as the handsome vampire bit her". I refuse to believe that I'm the only person in the world who'd like to read a horror novel with a cool chick protagonist...and it's not at least partly a romance.

Next up: My first attempt at a novella. Oh, and trying to sell things. Yeah, there's that.
