I didn't watch the Oscars last night (I pretty much never do), but I heard this morning that this movie called Crash won for Best Picture. So...is there anyone out there who has actually seen this movie? Buehller? ANYONE? And WTF is it about? The reviews I've read it made it sound like another of those horrid independent films in which a bunch of upper middle class white folks (who are usually supposed to be middle or lower class but live in houses and drive cars I could never afford) whine on and on about their feelings and somehow race enters the picture and I'd pretty much put a gun to my own head before I'd sit through something like that. The fact that Oscar's wealthy-elitist-liberal-but-not-really-whiter-than-vanilla voters awarded it Best Picture makes me even less interested in seeing it.

We spent part of our weekend watching instead the marvelous Taiwanese director Hou Hsiao Hsien's latest film, Three Times, starring Shu Qi as three different women in three different time periods. The middle story, with Shu as a 1911 courtesan whose lover is a freedom fighter but won't free her, was shot as a silent film (but in full color), and was brilliant. Shu was gorgeous, Chang Chen was superb as the man, and the sheer audacity of shooting a silent movie with otherwise contemporary filmic techniques knocked my socks off. Wish I'd thought of it first.
